Our Next Step Programme aims to equip young people who are blind, or vision impaired with the skills to manage the transition to life in college.
This 5-day residential course is delivered in a relaxed and supportive environment, with the opportunity to spend time with peers.
Course content includes:
- A day in the life of a student: Visit to a college campus and student accommodation.
- Interview skills, CV writing and job platforms.
- Money management skills: managing bank accounts, internet banking, Apple, and Google Pay. Budgeting and making your money go further.
- Personal safety in the community
- Using public transport and transport apps.
- Independent living skills development: Meal preparation and a practical session evaluating kitchen equipment.
- Assistive technology and apps to make life easier.
- Introduction to dog mobility
We train 5th and 6th year secondary students who are referred by the Visiting Teachers Service for the Visually Impaired.
