Child Mobility

Empowering children with greater independence and mobility

We work with children and young adults, their parents/guardians, their teacher, and the school in order to enhance the students’ quality of life.

Orientation and mobility is a critical area for students with visual impairments as it is essential for the student to learn to move safely and efficiently and as independently through their environment.

Our mobility training lessons may include:

· Understanding body image and how body parts move

· How to run, skip, and jump.

· Use of other senses like sense of smell, hearing and taste

· Listening skills such as identifying different traffic and other environmental sounds

· How to move safely and independently, learning routes and strategies for getting around familiar and unfamiliar places.

· Cane skills and guiding skills if appropriate

· Road safety

· Money management and shopping skills

· Using public transport and transport apps

Independent Living Skills

Children and young people can develop the skills they need to become independent.

Programmes can include:

· Personal care, such as learning to manage buttoning, zip and fasten shoes and cleaning teeth.

· Kitchen skills, from pouring and preparing foods to spreading and cooking techniques

· Trying out specialist equipment

This programme is only available in Cork, Tipperary and Waterford and can be accessed through direct referral from Visiting Teacher Services provided by the Department of Education and Skills.

Luke & Kain

Luke is still non-verbal but when I see him smiling down at Kain it shows me he doesn’t need words to express how happy he is.

Kim & Jango

Meeting Jango was one of the best moments of my life. He’s a beautiful big cuddly dog with the personality to match. From the moment I met him I knew we were going to be best buddies.

Shauna & Esme

When I needed a hand, I found a paw.

Conor & Quelda

When Conor is with Quelda he smiles and is comfortable being out and about which is such an amazing gift – we never leave home without her. She has changed all of our lives.

Aran & Buttons

Being a Guide Dog Owner is such a privilege and positive experience. Buttons has enhanced my life in so many ways and I will always be grateful for that.
