Community Dog Tori

Tori brings a smile, comfort and joy to everyone she meets at St Luke’s Radiation Oncology Network, Rathgar, Dublin.

We were truly delighted when ‘Tori,’ an 18-month-old black Labrador-Retriever, joined us here at St. Luke’s Hospital, Rathgar in Dublin in May 2025. Her presence has brought a special warmth and comfort to our daily lives. Tori has opened up opportunities for connection, encouraging social interaction among patients, their families, and staff, and reminding us of the power of kindness and companionship.

As a dedicated radiation service for cancer patients, we understand that many weeks of treatment can be challenging, requiring daily visits over extended periods, often away from home. To help support those facing this difficult journey, Tori became a part of our Psycho-Oncology team, offering gentle comfort to anyone who needs it most.

While she’s here, Tori is very much loved and cared for by her three ‘dog parents,’ who ensure she’s happy and well-balanced. She lives and comes to work each day with David Shannon, a senior psychologist within our team. Nicola Elmer, our Principal Psychologist, and Angela Martin, our Senior Hospital Administrator and PA to the General Manager, are also part of Tori’s caring circle.

Tori’s gentle presence brings joy not only to adult patients and staff but also to children who may need to undergo radiation treatment. Watching her interact with children is truly heart-warming—shifting their focus from treatment to playful moments of belly rubs and treats.

The calm and comfort that Tori offers can also make a meaningful difference for some of our more anxious adult patients. Her wagging tail, warm eyes, and the simple act of rolling onto her back for a belly rub serve as gentle reminders of the kindness that can ease even the heaviest hearts.

Tori’s special spirit reminds us all that sometimes, it’s the simplest gestures—like a gentle touch or a friendly nuzzle—that have the power to bring comfort.

Luke & Kain

Luke is still non-verbal but when I see him smiling down at Kain it shows me he doesn’t need words to express how happy he is.

Kim & Jango

Meeting Jango was one of the best moments of my life. He’s a beautiful big cuddly dog with the personality to match. From the moment I met him I knew we were going to be best buddies.

When I needed a hand, I found a paw.

Conor & Quelda

When Conor is with Quelda he smiles and is comfortable being out and about which is such an amazing gift – we never leave home without her. She has changed all of our lives.

Aran & Buttons

Being a Guide Dog Owner is such a privilege and positive experience. Buttons has enhanced my life in so many ways and I will always be grateful for that.
