With heatwaves occurring more and more often, we would like to again share some important advice from our Dog Welfare Team on how to keep your canine companion safe and comfortable during higher temperatures.
Hot Weather Tips for Dogs
- Always ensure your dog has access to shade and fresh drinking water.
- Plan walks for the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.
- Pavements and footpaths can become dangerously hot. If the back of your hand cannot comfortably remain on the surface for more than five seconds, it is too hot for your dog's paws.
Recognising Heatstroke
Heatstroke can be a serious medical emergency. If you notice any of the following signs, contact your vet immediately:
- Heavy panting
- Excessive drooling
- Lethargy or unusual tiredness
- Drowsiness
- Uncoordinated movements
- Collapse
- Vomiting
Important: If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, do not place a cold towel over them, as this can cause shock. Instead, use cool (not cold) water to help lower their body temperature while seeking veterinary assistance.
Keeping Your Dog Cool
- Groom your dog regularly during warmer weather.
- Add ice cubes to your dog's water bowl.
- Provide cooling mats for your dog to lie on.
- Offer frozen treats, such as stuffed Kongs, and access to a paddling pool if your dog enjoys water.
Finally, please take extra care when travelling with your dog in a vehicle. Never leave your dog unattended in a car, even for a short period, as temperatures can rise rapidly and pose a serious risk to their health and wellbeing.
