Independent Living Skills Programme:
At Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind we offer a programme called Independent Living Skills. The programme aims to enable blind and vision impaired persons to achieve increased independence in everyday tasks. The training also provides an opportunity to share experiences and make new friends. All of our Training is provided free of charge.
Subjects which can be covered include:
The Home Environment:
o Benefits of colour contrast
o Domestic organisation skills
o Handling liquids
o Use of lighting
o Approaches to household chores: cleaning, laundry
o Using specialist and non-specialist daily living equipment
Shopping Skills:
o Offsite visit to a local shopping centre with a Mobility Instructor.
o Money skills
Food Preparation:
o Chopping, peeling, washing, hygiene and food
safety
o Weighing and measuring
o Cooking techniques - frying, boiling, grilling,
microwaving, use of oven
o Labelling and storing household items
Other Topics:
o Writing skills, note taking
o Demonstration of ‘specialist’ equipment
The training courses are individually tailored to meet the requirements of each client.
Clients attend our National Headquarters and Training Centre for a one week residential course. Training is provided free of charge. There is a €10 per week accommodation charge and all meals are provided. Of course if you would like to make an additional donation, that can be accommodated.
