Paul Sheridan a keen cyclist and the man behind the annual Tour de Munster charity cycle (600km four day event) came up with the “cracker” of an idea and joined forces with Michael Corkery of Cork Bicycle Services to organise the event.
Paul said “Many cyclists do not cycle over the winter months but they would still have a level of fitness enabling them to cycle this distance. We have an opportunity here to gather together these cyclists, have a bit of fun and raise money for the life changing services offered by Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. We’re hoping to turn this into an annual fundraising event and we’re encouraging cyclists to get into the festive season spirit by decorating their bikes and themselves with Christmas decorations for the event.”
Michael gathered together cyclists from various clubs and previous cycling events. These include Cork Cycling Club members and participants from the Tour de Munster and the Mizen to Malin Cycling Challenge.
Kerry MacMahon, Community Fundraising Officer at Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind said “The Christmas Cracker Cycle is a really novel event and we’re delighted to be the charity recipients. We value Paul, Michael and the team’s enthusiasm and willingness to support us. Participants are due to arrive in Kinsale for lunch at The Blue Haven for 1pm and we’d be delighted if the people of Kinsale would cheer them on as they make their way through the town. Our team of volunteers will be there for the day collecting and to welcome the Christmas Cracker cyclists!”
They will arrive back at our Headquarters at approximately 4pm for Christmas refreshments and Tours of the Kennels.
