New 'kids' on the Block

Author: Niamh Daly (Kennels Team)

Kelvin, a yellow Labrador who has just joined our Early Training UnitEverytime a group of dogs move onto Advanced Training, we have what we call a New Intake. This is when dogs arrive at our National Headquarters and Training Centre from their Puppy Walker's homes and begin their official training to become a guide or assistance dog.  As you can imagine it can be an emotional time for the Puppy Walking Families as they have put so much time, effort and love into the pup's first year.  It is therefore very important to us that the transition from home life to the Kennel environment is as enjoyable and reassuring as possible. Individual attention and plenty of cuddles alongside bonding sessions with the dog's trainers are all part and parcel of the gradual introduction process.

Ozzie, Ofra, Nelson and Garrick enjoying some playtime in the sandrunEach dog is partnered to a Kennel Buddy from our Kennels Team to ensure that their transition experience is a pleasant one. This month's New Intake include Kelvin, Jack, Ivan and Ofra who are settling in nicely.  Featured above is Kelvin who is a lovely light coloured yellow Labrador.  Pictured left is Ofra (second from the left) playing with some of our other dogs in training.  From left to right is Ozzie, Nelson and Garrick.  These photographs were taken in the sandrun just outside the Pod Kennel at our National Headquarters and Training Centre.  As you can see, they were having a ball!
