A grooming good day!
Date: Thursday 01 July, 2010
Did you know that the standard of grooming and veterinary care of guide and assistance dogs is one of the reasons that guide and assistance dogs are exempt from the Hygiene Regulations. This exemption means that they are allowed in public places where normal pets would not be allowed to go for example, restaurants, food stores and hospitals. So grooming is a very important part of our training to ensure the highest standards of care.

When we have guide dogs owners attending our classes here at the Training Centre in Cork, the Kennel's Team need to cover the general care and grooming of a guide dog with their new owners. Each breed has a particular grooming procedure which needs to be taught as well as the specific use for each piece of grooming equipment and how to checkover your dog for any health issues.
During the second week of class, one of the Kennel Team Members gives a talk to the new guide dog owners on how to maintain a healthy and happy working dog once they leave the centre. Topics covered include parasite control, boosters and veterinary care such as kennel cough and lameness. It can be a lot to take in but we're are always just a phonecall away for any queries and to give advice. Another topic we cover is weight control. Anyone who has a Labrador knows that when it comes to these pooches - its a case of a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips!

If you’re crazy about dogs, as we are, you’ve come to right blog. Here, you can trace the steps of our dogs in training as they journey from puppy stage to qualified guide or assistance dog. You’ll also get interesting bits of information about dog behaviour, training and care, courtesy of our Blogging Team.
